MESKEL (The Finding of The True Cross) September 26th – October 7th 2015

Meskel is a vibrant national holiday that has been observed throughout the country by Ethiopian Christians for over 1,600 years. It commemorates the discovery of the cross on which Jesus was crucified, by the Empress Helen, the mother of Constantine the Great.  On the eve of Meskel there is a celebration held at Meskel Square. Tall branches are tied together and yellow daisies, popularly called Meskel flowers, are placed on top before the bonfire is lit.

TIMKET (Ethiopian Epiphany) January 14th – January 25th 2016

Timket is of special significance in Ethiopia. It is the most important and colourful event of the year. The festival starts on the eve of Timket. The holy Tabot, a replica of the Ark of the Covenant, is taken from each church to a central area near a stream or a pool. Accompanying the procession are tens of thousands of church members and believers, chanting, dancing, drum-beating, horn-blowing. All in all, it resembles the scene described in the Old Testament. As evening falls, the priests and the pious believers participate in an overnight vigil around the Tabots until dawn. The nearby body of water is blessed towards dawn and sprinkled on the participants, some of whom enter the water and immerse themselves, symbolically renewing their baptismal vows. The congregation then follows the bishops, elders and clergy as the Tabots are carried back to their respective churches.
